Do you think anorexia is only for teenage girls? Think again over it. Some researchers believe that more than 10% of anorexics are over 40. What makes an adult to starve herself or himself? Have you ever thought of it?

Firstly, anorexia in short, is an eating disorder that can have harmful consequences. People suffering from anorexia consume very little and restrictive quantities of food which leads to starvation. Thereby, they become thin and malnourished. Yet still perceive themselves as overweight. Most of the time, people with anorexia become so undernourished that they have to be hospitalized. Even then they deny that nothing is wrong with them. Whenever asked they usually deny they have a problem with low weight. Often, they weigh themselves frequently, eat only some amount and only eaten certain foods. Some people will exercise excessively and force themselves to vomit or use laxatives to produce weight loss. Due to this, complications may arise such as osteoporosis, infertility and heart damage among others. Even women can often face issues in having menstrual periods.

Eating disorders can occur at any age but the social stigma behind it, keeps some older women from seeking help. Anorexia Nervosa is a complicated illness and can be rooted from many different sources and not just one. The cause is not known. Cultural factors also play a huge role in regard to societies that value thinness and body shaming, these areas have higher rates of disease. Additionally, it occurs more commonly among those who are involved in activities that value thinness such as high level.

It might be a coping mechanism for some, while for others it may be body dysmorphia and low self-esteem. It can be triggered by anxiety or depression, started off as dieting leading to an anorexia, feeling obligated to fit into society’s beauty standards or due to major life transitions or events.

SELF CARE practice is very necessary for treating anorexia:

S- set goals

One should set goals such as writing down reasons why it’s wrong to think that thinner people are better and keep reviewing them regularly, make a list of things for which you are good at or have a mirror talk and find activities you enjoy, including physical activities. Most important thing one should do regularly is exercise for better physical as well good mental health.

It will make you feel better about yourself and the world when you speak up and share your issues.
